  • Lionel Messi was the legend of the highest-scoring World Cup ever

  • Lionel Messi was the star as Argentina got back to the highest point of world football

  • Also, the first player to score in five FIFA World Cups was Cristiano Ronaldo

  • The most noteworthy scoring World Cup in history set new norms on and off the field

LUSAIL, Qatar, December 18 - In an incredible World Cup final on Sunday, Argentina defeated France 4-2 on penalties after Lionel Messi scored twice in a 3-3 tie and Kylian Mbappe got a full go-around to bring the holders back from 2-0 and 3-2 down.

Two-star players from the tournament delivered commanding performances on the biggest stage possible, capping off an epic night of drama, pretty high emotion, and swinging fortunes with one of the all-time great finals.

This was continuously going to be a FIFA World Cup like no other.

The first to be facilitated in the Middle East, the first to be played in November and December, and also the first of its size to be held in a little geological region, Qatar 2022 offered a new contort on this old and much-cherished celebration of football.

The opportunity to witness many World Cup matches in one day, for example, was a fresh one that came with traversing so much new ground, but the hazards were obvious and overwhelming.

And this was confirmed earlier this week when Gianni Infantino acknowledged having had reservations prior to the tournament about having so many fans from so many nations, at the same time, in the same place.

The FIFA President continued, "In a typical World Cup, you have fans from two countries in one place, not more. The World Cup is being watched in this location by fans from 32 countries in addition to the rest of the world.

There were concerns about how Qatar and its infrastructure would handle such a large invasion given that the area in question has a population of less than 2.9 million and its stadiums is all within a 35-mile radius.

Others questioned how the tournament's timing—amid the majority of players' domestic seasons—would affect the on-field performance, with less preparation time and expected results.

Those uncertainties were, of course, gradually dispelled by a tidal surge of magnificent football, faultless planning, and warm, enthusiastic ambiances in the stadiums and on the streets.

This week, Jurgen Klinsmann referred to it as a World Cup organized to perfection, and Infantino is far from the only one to call Qatar 2022 the best World Cup ever.

Of course, the tournament's star man is getting more and more of the same description. Lionel Messi was always a front-runner for the title of "GOAT," but a genuinely outstanding month in Qatar has strengthened his case for the honor.

Goals from Argentina's captain influenced the outcome of the tournament the most in the World Cup with the most goals ever scored.

And not even the fiercest opponents of La Albiceleste could deny this brilliant player his well-deserved opportunity to win the prize he has long sought.

Champion sides

Argentina

La Albiceleste had a wild voyage, going from the punchline of jokes to deserving victors. Few could have predicted that they would bounce back to realize their long-held dream in such stunning - and dramatic - circumstances, just as no one could have predicted their opening-match loss to Saudi Arabia.

What else is there to say about their talisman? Messi is rightfully adored far beyond Argentina's borders, and the tiny magician's quest for World Cup victory enthralled and won over fans of many nations to his squad.

Morocco

An African team finally managed to make it to the World Cup semifinals after 88 years of trying. The pioneers of the continent were Morocco.

Croatia

A nation with fewer than four million citizens finishing second and third in consecutive World Cup editions must unquestionably be counted among the tournament's greatest triumphs.

Croatia's highlight came when they shocked tournament favorites Brazil and went on to place third.

Japan

Would Spain, a 21st-century juggernaut, or four-time champion Germany win Group E? By eliminating both of those titans to take first place, Japan made a mockery of the issue that the public was evaluating.

The Samurai Blue also made history by becoming just the third team in World Cup history—and the first since West Germany in 1970—to come back from halftime deficits in two separate games to win them.

Individuals who excel

Lionel Messi: This calls for a stand-alone article.

Cristiano Ronaldo: The first person to score at five FIFA World Cups is Cristiano Ronaldo. With a decidedly struck kick in Doha, Cristiano created history and put Portugal on the path to a crucial 3-2 victory over Ghana.

Kylian Mbappe:  With eight goals in seven games, Kylian Mbappe led France to their highest-scoring World Cup since Cristiano Ronaldo's impressive eight-goal performance in the 2002 tournament.

In addition, Mbappe became the first player since Geoff Hurst in 1966 to score a final hat-trick and only the fifth player in World Cup history to score in two different finals.

With four goals between 2018 and 2022, Mbappe has now surpassed Geoff Hurst as the player with the most goals in the tournament's history.

Lionel Scaloni: At the age of 44, the Argentinean became the youngest coach to win the World Cup since Cesar Luis Menotti, who was 39 years old in 1978.

Yassine Bounou: The Moroccan hero made history by being the first goalie from Africa to keep three clean sheets in a single World Cup.

Olivier Giroud: The huge Frenchman only started for France because Karim Benzema had a late pre-tournament injury, but he made the most of it by scoring four goals to raise his total to 53 for his nation, two more than Thierry Henry's previous record of 51.

Neymar: Although the Brazilian No. 10's tournament ended in tears, he still scored 77 goals, tying Pele for the joint-most goals scored by the A Seleço.

Goncalo Ramos: a young star of Portugal, became the first player since Miroslav Klose in 2002 to score a hat-trick on his first World Cup start.

The only team to score three goals in a final and lose is France.

Numerous Argentina supporters wearing Number 10 Messi shirts lingered in the stadium for two hours after the game as the players and their families posed for photos on the field and performed a joyful lap of honor while carrying the golden trophy they last held in their hands 36 years prior.

One more wonderful experience of FIFA WORLD CUP Qatar 2022 comes to an end.
